Dr. Lemon, a native of Barnwell, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2014 as the medical profession representative from the Second Congressional District. He served as Chairman of MUSC's Board of Trustees from 2020-2024.

Dr. Lemon has practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery since finishing his residency at Emory University. Before Emory, he graduated from Clemson University and the MUSC College of Dental Medicine, where he also completed an internship. Dr. Lemon is a past president of the Greater Columbia Dental Society, Central District Dental Society, and the South Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Lemon and his wife, Karrie, reside in Columbia. Dr. Lemon’s son is also graduate of the MUSC College of Dental Medicine.

Mrs. Barnes, a native of Rock Hill, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2014 as the lay representative from the Fifth Congressional District.

Mrs. Barnes graduated from Clemson University in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. She started her professional career with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) as a patient service coordinator. Among her many responsibilities with MDA, she represented South Carolina at the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethons. After working with MDA, Mrs. Barnes began a new career path in the computer industry. She is vice president of Applied Data Technologies, which she cofounded in 1998. The company has grown into a leading top-tier reseller of Hewlett-Packard products. She has served on many panels and advisory boards with Hewlett-Packard.

Mrs. Barnes and her husband, Ruck, reside in Rock Hill and have three children and six grandchildren.

Dr. Brown, a native Charlestonian, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2018 as the medical profession representative from the Sixth Congressional District.

Dr. Brown is a 1991 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor's degree in engineering. After four years at sea as a commissioned naval officer, he took an assignment in Charleston to teach naval engineering at The Citadel. While there, he earned a master's degree at night, resigned his commission with the Navy, and matriculated into MUSC's College of Medicine. In 2002, he graduated from the College of Medicine and returned to active duty as a physician. During his twenty years of service, Dr. Brown served with distinction on multiple deployments at sea and on the ground in support of the Marines.

Upon his retirement from active duty, Dr. Brown returned to his hometown and practiced emergency medicine for years before transitioning to private practice. He still devotes time to treating veterans as part-time staff at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Brown is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Physicians. He is also a member of Sigma Pi Phi fraternity. He sits on the boards of First Capital Bank, MUSC Physicians, and the MUSC Foundation.

Dr. Brown and his wife, Deborah, reside in Charleston and have two children, Gabriel and Lillian.

Dr. Butehorn was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2019 as the medical profession representative from the Fourth Congressional District.

Dr. Butehorn is a 1994 Duke University graduate majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor concentration in history. He earned his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine in 1998 and completed his otolaryngology, head and neck surgery residency at Albany Medical College. After residency, he joined Spartanburg and Greer Ear, Nose and Throat & Allergy, a private practice. Dr. Butehorn has served as the trustee representing Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties at the South Carolina Medical Association and was elected President for the 2025-2026 term. He is a member and past president of the Spartanburg County Medical Society. He is the chief of the division of otolaryngology at Spartanburg Medical Center and co-director of the head and neck tumor board at Gibbs Cancer Center. He is an assistant professor at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Carolinas Campus. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy and past president of the South Carolina Otolaryngic Society and the MUSC College of Medicine Alumni Association.

Dr. Butehorn and his wife, Lori, reside in Spartanburg and have two children.

Dr. Castles was appointed to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2017 by Governor Henry McMaster.

Dr. Castles is a second-generation pediatrician practicing in Columbia, South Carolina, at the office his father founded, Pediatric Associates. Dr. Castles is a graduate of the MUSC College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the MUSC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Castles is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Castles previously served on the Board of Trustees at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. For many years he has been an active member of the MUSC community serving as an interviewer during the admissions process for the College of Medicine and was a previous member of the MUSC Board of Visitors. Former Governor Mark Sanford honored Dr. Castles for his numerous charitable contributions and dedication to his community with the prestigious Order of the Silver Crescent. In 2014, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine awarded him Preceptor of the Year and was named The State newspaper’s Best Pediatrician from 2015-2019. Dr. Castles was also awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state of South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.

Dr. Castles and his wife, Libby Lee Gantt, reside in Columbia and have six children and ten grandchildren. Beyond his devotion to family and work, he enjoys a variety of other activities including golf and water sports.

Dr. Christian, a native of Greenwood, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2017 as the medical profession representative from the Third Congressional District. He is the current Vice Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees.

Dr. Christian received his bachelor’s degree in English from Wofford College and his medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine. He recently retired after serving over 33 years as an orthopedic surgeon in Greenwood. The primary focus of his practice was reconstructive surgery including total knee and hip replacement. Dr. Christian is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Christian is past director of the South Carolina Joint Center at Self Regional Healthcare.

An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Christian and his wife, Pattie, reside in Greenwood and have three children and five grandchildren.

Mr. Schulze was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 2002 as the lay representative from the Third Congressional District. He is the current Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees.

Mr. Schulze is a graduate of Georgia Military Academy and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia. He received his master's degree in accounting from the University of South Carolina. He is a past Distinguished Lecturer at the University of Georgia.

From 1968-1972, he served in the United States Air Force. For three years of his four years of service, he was stationed in the Far East and Southeast Asia. His eight decorations for honorable service include four Outstanding Unit awards with "V" device for Valor, the Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars for service in Vietnam and Thailand and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm for Valor. Mr. Schulze was inducted as a member of the inaugural class of the South Carolina Military Veterans Hall of Fame in 2026.

Mr. Schulze is a retired shareholder in a regional accounting and consulting firm. He currently provides financial forensics services as an investigator and expert witness. He is also a licensed private investigator in the state of South Carolina and a former president of the South Carolina Association of CPAs, as well as a former member and chairman of the South Carolina Board of Accountancy.

In addition to serving in the leadership of MUSC, he is also a member of the Finance and Audit committee for both Shriners International and the twenty-two hospitals of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Mr. Schulze and his wife, Sarah Alice, reside in Greenwood and have two daughters.

Mr. Stephenson, a lifelong South Carolinian, was elected to the MUSC Board of Trustees in 1998 as the lay representative from the Fourth Congressional District. He served as Chairman of the MUSC Board of Trustees from 2010-2014.

Mr. Stephenson earned both his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Stephenson has practiced law since 1979 as a litigator for most of his professional life but now mediates civil cases. He has been consistently recognized by "The Best Lawyers in America," one of the "Top 25 Attorneys in South Carolina," and other similar designations. Mr. Stephenson's contributions to public service include President of the Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina; President of the Greenville Cancer Society; Greenville Civil Service Commission member; and 300 for Greenville.

Mr. Stephenson and his wife, Dianne, live in Greenville and have two children.

Chris Cowan, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and holds the SmartState Endowed Chair in Brain Imaging. Dr. Cowan is also the Director of the NIH-funded Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Neurodevelopment and Its Disorders (CNDD), the Scientific Director of the NIDA-funded Charleston Opioid Center on Addiction (COCA), and he is co-founder of NeuroEpigenix, a company advancing a novel therapeutic treatment for alcohol use disorder.

Dr. Cowan earned his BA from Wesleyan University (CT) and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital in the area of molecular neurobiology. Prior to joining MUSC in 2016, Dr. Cowan was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical School and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital.

Dr. Cowan’s NIH-funded research focuses on molecular mechanisms of developmental brain wiring, syndromic forms of autism spectrum disorder, and epigenetic mechanisms underlying relapse and drug-cue reactivity in substance use disorders. His preclinical research lab utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to study these disorders, including genomics, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, electrophysiology, complex behavioral analyses, and therapeutic development.
