Celebrating Dr. Ida Spruill on her birthday

September 03, 2019

Dear friends and family,

As many of you know, the MUSC College of Nursing established the Dr. Ida Spruill Scholarship in July 2018 to honor my dear friend, the late Dr. Ida Spruill. What you may not know is that Sept. 6 is Ida's birthday – and mine too! I’ve always felt connected to Ida through our shared birthday and can still hear her saying to me, “Not to worry. We are Virgos!”

As a friend, I am excited to see this scholarship come to fruition. I always greatly admired Ida’s desire to empower people of all backgrounds and often witnessed her advocating for her belief that we all deserve respect, justice, and access to quality health care. I can think of no better way to honor Ida’s life than empowering a student through her scholarship.

The Dr. Ida Spruill Scholarship provides assistance to MUSC College of Nursing minority students who are from rural and underserved areas and have an interest in serving vulnerable populations. As we pay it forward, future nursing students will as well, by serving the communities that meant so much to Ida.

For my birthday I have decided to honor Ida by supporting her scholarship with a monthly donation for the next five years. And since it is my birthday, I am asking you to do the same! What better way to celebrate both our birthdays than to contribute to her lasting legacy?

A gift of $10, $15, or $25 a month adds up quickly and will ensure that Ida’s scholarship lives on for years to come. You can make your gift online or by contacting the College of Nursing Office of Development at 843-792-8421.

Sincerely,
