Message from the Dean

Dental

Greetings from the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. Over the past few months our faculty, staff, students, and alumni have been working tirelessly to make sure that 2019 will be a year of great achievement.

The College’s focus remains on providing the best didactic education and clinical excellence. To start 2019, we have 98% first attempt pass rate in the NDBE Part II and a ~90% pass rate in the live patient based clinical licensure exam which reflects the hard work and achievement of our students, faculty, and staff.  ~29/73 of our senior students have competitively matched and will be progressing to residencies or advanced programs, including 5 to OMFS and 5 to Orthodontic programs nationally. We continue to strive to align CDM with MUSC Health’s clinical enterprise. As we reflect on MUSC Values, we must remember that they are an inspiration and way of life for us each day. Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Compassion, and Collaboration are the foundation for our success. We not only have a bold vision but we are implementing strategic initiatives so they become a reality.

In the last year we have increased scholarship to students by 2.5 fold primarily due to the maturing of Dr. Haisting’s generous gift. I was delighted to meet so many of our alumni at homecoming and give you an update about the College. We were also grateful for the support of our Board of Trustees, Dr. Lemon (Vice Chair of the BOT) and Dr. Davis, who spoke eloquently about various initiatives at Homecoming. At homecoming, we launched an ambitious 10 million dollar scholarship campaign that will help train the next generation of oral healthcare providers. Funds raised by this campaign will work to contain the student debt that burdens our graduates. If each of our 2800 alumni and our friends, were able to provide $5000 within a year, we would exceed our goal! We look forward to your help and generosity in this regard.  This is so important to us.

The College will continue to lead the country in innovation and digital technology. Due to Dr. Walter Renee’s hard work, we will soon receive a 3D metal printer. To the best of our knowledge, we will be the first Dental School to receive one – we will keep on innovating. We hope to start a Master’s program in Digital Dentistry in 2019. Our faculty and students relentlessly pursue internal and external partners that will move the College forward. Many of our faculty members are also recipients of competitive grants and awards. They pursue opportunities in research, appointments to committees and boards, and continuing education, among many other stellar accolades. We continue to grow and are proud to have avoided an increase in tuition two years in a row, a testament to the hard work of all in the College.

Our staff members will pursue ongoing clinical and administrative excellence and the Staff Congress Leadership Council is entering their second year. They are planning to work on staff engagement and providing a voice for all staff at all levels of the College.

As we proceed into 2019, we will be successful with the continued support of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. I cannot wait to see what this year will bring us.

Respectfully,

Dean Sarandeep Huja
