The Division of Oral Pathology is pleased to offer a biopsy service for the microscopic diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial lesions. The laboratory currently receives over 6000 specimens each year from clinicians in South Carolina and across the country. Biopsy kits are provided free of charge and include a bottle of 10 percent neutral-buffered formalin, biopsy request form, and a postage-paid return envelope or UPS pouch for easy return to our laboratory. If you wish to order biopsy kits for your office, please contact us at 843-792-4495.
On the day that specimens are received, they are grossly examined and prepared for overnight processing. In most cases, the specimen is examined microscopically on the next business day and a written report is faxed that same afternoon. This report includes a gross and microscopic description, diagnosis, appropriate comments, and ICD-10 diagnosis codes. A hard copy of the report also will be sent by mail. Specimens that require additional procedures such as decalcification, additional slides, or special stains may be delayed before a report can be issued. In any case with a malignant diagnosis, or whenever additional explanation of an unusual diagnosis is necessary, the clinician will be called by the oral pathologist to discuss the case.
Normally, the patient will be billed for oral pathology laboratory services. The fees for pathology laboratory services are usually covered by the patient's medical insurance, and we accept payments from Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
