Diversity & Inclusion

The College of Graduate Studies at the Medical University of South Carolina values the broadened perspectives, energy, and intellectual synergy that are provided by a diverse student population. Studies have shown that working groups made up of problem solvers from different backgrounds perform better than do groups where the individuals are a more homogeneous population (Hong, L. and Page, S.E. Groups of diverse problem solvers can outperform groups of high-ability problem solvers. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 101:16385-16389 (2004)). We are committed to using the benefits gained from diversity to power discovery in the biomedical sciences.

Training Programs

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

Offers outstanding undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty members on cutting edge biomedical research projects. Participants in this 10-week program are to perform at a graduate student level. Students are placed with faculty members to work with faculty on an individual basis or as part of a research team. Research teams may also include graduate students, post docs, Medical Students, research scientists and other SURP students.

Summer Health Professionals Research Program (SHP)

This program introduces students in the health professions to biomedical research by allowing them to work during the summer in a research environment under the guidance of an experienced investigator.

Post-baccalaureate Research Program (PREP)

This NIH-funded program provides a one-year intensive research and professional development program for individuals interested in pursuing a Ph.D or a M.D/Ph.D in the biomedical sciences.

Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD)

The IMSD program is designed to increase the participation of under-represented groups in the biomedical sciences.

Special Events & Programs

The Ernest E Just Symposium, hosted by the College of Graduate Studies, celebrates the life of the noted African-American biologist with a day devoted to providing information to undergraduate students about opportunities in all of the colleges at MUSC. Morning keynote talks focus on the life and history of Ernest E Just as well as having student speakers who talk about their research projects. In the afternoon visiting students meet with admissions professionals and current students to find out more about their college of interest and have tours of campus.
