Living in Charleston

The historic seaport city of Charleston is famous for its architecture and its gardens. Grand apartments in centuries-old homes line the charming streets that wander through quiet neighborhoods dating from the 1670s.

The Charleston Museum, Charleston Library, and Gibbes Museum of art satisfy a variety of cultural interests. Charleston is also the site of the annual, internationally celebrated Spoleto Arts Festival- when the many Charleston venues join forces to offer over 120 world class dance, theatre, and opera performances in 17 days and nights. At the same time the more accessible Piccolo Spoleto adds another 700 cultural experiences to the festival, transforming Charleston into a vibrant cultural mecca.

Year round attractions include the Charleston Symphony, the Charleston Opera Company, and the Choral Society, as well as by many church groups. The Footlight Players are well-known for their productions. Charleston also boasts a vibrant nightlife with numerous restaurants and clubs.

The presence of nearby colleges, beaches and rivers and a pleasant subtropical climate add to the Charleston’s many charms. Outdoor activities include a variety of water sports such as skiing, surfing, and wind surfing as well as camping opportunities on the barrier islands in the adjacent wildlife sanctuaries. The Appalachian Mountains are a three-hour drive from campus and provide for hiking, camping, and snow skiing.
