Administrative Core

The overall goal of the Administration Core is to coordinate the development of the CCCR at MUSC. Our approach combines responsible management, fiscal accountability, comprehensive programmatic strategies, a pilot project program, and a multifaceted program evaluation. Gary Gilkeson, M.D., with assistance from James Oates, M.D., and Richard Silver, M.D., as Associate Directors, and an Executive Committee that includes the core directors, health disparities experts and key research base members, will direct the core.

Administrative Core Leadership & Staff

Director:

Gary S. Gilkeson, M.D., Principal Investigator, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, Professor, Division of Rheumatology and Immunology

As Center Director, Dr. Gilkeson is responsible for planning, directing, and implementing all aspects of the Center's activities. This includes monthly meetings with the Executive Committee and regular communication with project leaders, co-investigators, and advisory committees. He is responsible for selecting visiting speakers on subjects of interest to the CCCR and for all CCCR publicity. Dr. Gilkeson reviews all Center publications and is accountable for the scientific and financial activities of the Center.

Associate Director:

Richard M. Silver, M.D., Director, Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, Distinguished University Professor

As Associate Director, Dr. Silver assists with administrative and scientific aspects of the Center. As a well-established clinical investigator focusing on scleroderma, Dr. Silver's scientific expertise and ongoing collaborations are an asset in helping administer the broad spectrum of activities in the CCCR. He is responsible for overseeing the scleroderma component of the CCCR, recruitment of additional research base members from the scleroderma research community. He also is in charge of the pilot project program, including working with SCTR staff regarding adaptation and use of the web-based platform for soliciting applications, and assigning for review, peer-reviewing and collating scores, monitoring awards, and tracking progress of the pilot projects.

Associate Director:

Jim Oates, M.D., Associate Director and Professor, Division Rheumatology and Immunology, Vice Chair for Research and Reporting for the Medical University Health Authority

As Associate Director, Dr. Oates will serve as the Director should Dr. Gilkeson be unable to fulfill the duties of Director. He also serves as Director of the Clinical and Community Resource Core (CCR Core). His role in the Administrative Core will be to direct the lupus-related efforts of the CCCR and recruit new research base members. He will oversee all aspects of the website and external communications to the community and stakeholders. He has extensive expertise in lupus and lupus nephritis biomarkers, mediators of disease, outcomes, and clinical trial development. He will supervise all aspects of the CCR Core and will serve as a consultant on Aim 4. His oversight will include request fulfillment, informatics build (with Dr. Obeid), health record phenotype process implementation with clinicians, coordination of team activities, and oversight of administrative issues, data entry, and quality control (with the Methodologic Core).
