Adult Emergency Department

The Medical University of South Carolina is a 709-bed institute with over 62,000 annual admissions. In our main emergency department, MUSC hosts 51 beds, including three trauma resuscitation bays with a dedicated CT scanner. The ED is organized in a pod system, with A-side having 9 beds, B-side having 12 beds, C-side having 8 beds, D-side having 12 beds, and F-side having 10 beds. The adult emergency department has over 51,000 annual visits and is staffed by physicians and physician assistants who are employed through the university. As a Level-1 Trauma center, MUSC ED has access to all medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties. We also have a dedicated Ashley River Tower Emergency Department, which is an 18-bed emergency department that contains our interventional cardiology specialty as a comprehensive cardiac center. This ED has over 11,000 annual visits.

Pediatric Emergency Department

MUSC has a brand new, dedicated pediatric hospital called the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital that overlooks the Charleston harbor. This hospital has a 20-bed pediatric emergency department, which was opened in 2019. The peds ED is a level 1 trauma center with two resuscitation bays. The hospital features brand new equipment with a dedicated CT scanner and two available ultrasound machines.
