Vision & Mission of the Department
The Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is one of the oldest academic departments in the nation. Our faculty, residents, and staff take great pride in our service to patients, dedication to continuing improvement, and our commitment to academic growth and scholarly productivity. These values are reflected in our Department vision and mission statements:
The Department of Family Medicine strives to be recognized within the community, Medical University of South Carolina, and the nation as an innovative leader in clinical care, primary care education, and research.
The mission of the Department of Family Medicine is to provide excellent and comprehensive interdisciplinary health care to individuals, their families, and the community. This focus on excellence in care will be blended with the educational needs of residents, medical students, and health professions students and the search for new knowledge that will enhance the practice of family physicians.
The Department places a great deal of value on continual intellectual and professional development of our faculty and comprehensive service to our patients and community. To meet the future needs of our learners and patients, we have developed a current strategic plan with four main focus areas:
- Provide a clinical experience to patients that they will rate as their best Health care experience they have ever received.
- Provide a stimulating academic environment in which faculty members are intellectually challenged and work together to expand their abilities to understand, teach, deliver, and lead primary Health care.
- Expand and enhance our research capacity to lead and participate in clinical trials and other studies requiring primary data collection from patients.
- Be a regional and national leader in the use of simulation in medical education for medical students, family medicine residents, and practicing primary care physicians in the community.
The Department of Family Medicine is organized into 5 sections:
