Clinical Training

Each of our seven tracks (six specialty tracks, plus the general track) has a unique identification number for the purpose of the match. Applicants are free to apply to as many or few tracks as they think provide a match for their interests and training needs. This information should be specified and explained in the cover letter accompanying the AAPI materials.

Each of the tracks is described on the pages within this section of the website, along with descriptions of each rotation that falls within that track. Because the general track has no rotations that are “unique” to it (that is, all of the rotations within the internship are considered general track rotations), there are no rotation descriptions presented under that heading.

None of our rotations requires previous experience or expertise in that area. We adapt the training provided to the particular needs of each intern; those with prior experience and expertise with a particular patient group or diagnosis may expect to gain significant advanced proficiency; however, someone with no experience in that area may expect to achieve intermediate-to-advanced competency, based on their experience level.

Interns who match within a track will get at least half (six months of full-time training) of their clinical rotations within the special emphasis area. However, it is important to note that interns typically complete at least one rotation outside of their special emphasis area. This helps maintain the generalist nature of the program because it provides opportunities for all interns to receive clinical training outside of their specialty area/track. Applicants are asked to provide information on their preferences for rotations after they have interviewed, but prior to submission of the match lists.
