Center for Anatomical Studies and Education

The Center for Anatomical Studies and Education or CASE was created in July 2009 to fill the void left when the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy was re-named the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology. The Center for Anatomical Studies and Education was created to establish an academic structure within the Department to host the activities related to teaching of anatomical sciences to the students in the College of Health Professions, the College of Dental Medicine and the College of Medicine, as well as to provide a university interface to support and promote anatomical research studies, educational projects and continuing education workshops at MUSC. The specific goals were:

• To create a legal umbrella to host the Anatomical Gift Program
• To provide a modern and state of the art dissection laboratory that is compliant with HIPAA, OSHA and IRB regulations in place at MUSC
• To provide an interface allowing anatomical research studies and educational projects and workshops to be performed legally within the context of academic and private entities at MUSC, in the State of South Carolina, as well as in the United States and internationally
• To promote the use and integration of educational technology and modern anatomical techniques (such as plastination) in the field of anatomical sciences and in collaboration with academic and private entities at MUSC, in the State of South Carolina, as well as in the United States and internationally
• To provide an academic structure for the recruitment, training and development of faculty allowing for the continuity of quality research and education in the field of anatomical sciences across colleges at the MUS

Since its initial creation, the level of activity for the CASE has grown significantly. The CASE continues to provide cadavers on a routine basis for the training of the residents at MUSC as well as providing fresh frozen and embalmed specimens for research projects and workshops.
