Student understands the physiologic principles that govern normal blood pressure and hemodynamic homeostasis.

Knowledge Objectives

Through their reading and patient care experiences, at the end of the rotation students should be able to:

Define shock.
Differentiate the signs, symptoms, and hemodynamic features of shock:
Discuss priorities and specific goals of resuscitation for each form of shock:
Define goals of resuscitation
Defend choice of fluids
Discuss indications for transfusion
Discuss management of acute coagulopathy
Discuss indications for invasive monitoring
Discuss use of inotropes, afterload reduction in management
Discuss priorities in resuscitation (ABC’s)
Interpret hemodynamic measurements, to include Swan Ganz catheter measurements.
