Jared White, M.D. Joins Division of Transplant Surgery; Named Surgical Director of the Liver Transplant Program

Jared White, M.D. Jared A. White, M.D. FACS joins the MUSC Department of Surgery as associate professor in the division of Transplant Surgery, where he will lead the Liver Transplant Program serving as surgical director, effective February 1, 2019.  

Dr. White received his Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine and completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Alabama (UAB). In 2013, he completed an Abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery Fellowship at UAB.

Dr. White joined the faculty at UAB as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor with tenure and served as director of the UAB Liver Tumor Clinic and Interdisciplinary Liver Tumor Board.  He also served as the medical co-director of the Alabama Organ Center with Dr. Devin Eckhoff.

His clinical expertise includes complex hepatobiliary procedures in the treatment of malignant liver tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and secondary metastatic tumors, in addition to benign lesions such as large adenomas, giant cysts, hemangiomas, and bile duct strictures/injuries.

Dr. White’s unique expertise is in minimally invasive hepatic surgery including laparoscopic and robotic liver resections. Dr. White also performs standard open and minimally invasive general surgical procedures such as exploratory laparotomy/laparoscopy, ventral and inguinal hernia repair, cholecystectomy, soft tissue tumor excision, vascular access procedures, splenectomy, gastric de-vascularization, complex surgical shunts, and organ procurement techniques.  In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. White served as associate program director of the UAB General Surgery Residency program.

White’s current research includes maintaining and analyzing a large hepatocellular carcinoma database that consists of patients treated for the past decade at UAB with liver transplant, liver resection, and liver directed therapies.  This database consists of over 1600 patients complete with all of the relevant clinical parameters and variables collected in a retrospective as well as prospective manner for the past 10 years.  He and his colleagues have published numerous manuscripts in the field of hepatocellular carcinoma management as a result of their findings, and most recently won the Gold Podium Award at the Southeastern Surgical Congress in 2018 with their presentation on “Comparison of Eleven Hepatocellular Carcinoma Staging Systems: Performance of ITA.LI.CA in an American Cohort.”
