Yost Named to National Academy of Inventors

Michael Yost, Ph.D., professor of Surgery and Bioengineering and the vice chairman of Research within the Department of Surgery at MUSC has been elected Fellow status of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) class of 2018. The 2018 class of Fellows represent 125 research universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes worldwide and are named inventors on nearly 4,000 issued U.S. patents.

According to the NAI Website, election to NAI Fellow status is the highest professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.

Dr. Yost has made substantial contributions to engineering and science in the areas of tissue engineering and inflammation modulation, muscle repair and regeneration and the use of collagen as a biomaterial for regenerative medicine. Yost is the inventor of many regenerative medicine technologies including cell stretching bioreactors as well as collagen tube technology of both the straight curved and branched collagen scaffolds.

Yost is the inventor of the connexin mimetic peptide, JM2, which has been shown to modulate early inflammatory events of a foreign body response (e.g. an implant or tissue engineered construct) via purinergic signaling. This peptide has also been shown to anti tumorigenic properties in glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer.

He is the inventor of a 3-D bioprinter technology that allows the printer to know exactly where the print surface is at any time and has “printed” living tissues. Other current projects include the development of biomaterial fabrication systems and evaluation of naturally occurring biopolymers for use as engineering materials, as well as angiogenic and inflammatory modulating technologies for engineered skeletal muscle.

Yost is the recipient of The Rising Star Award from the University of South Carolina and a Certificate of Recognition from Governor Nikki Haley and the South Carolina Academy of Science for excellence in scientific awareness.

He holds six U.S. patents and one foreign patent that have been licensed to four companies. He is the founder of Vitasol, LLC and Synovidah, LLC. He has published 93 original peer reviewed articles as well as nine book chapters, served as associate editor on the Biomaterials Journal Titanium from 2008-2012, and was on the editorial board of the Journal Annals of Plastic Surgery from 2009-2011.

Yost is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers and a member of the MUSC Foundation for Research Development Board of Directors.

The 2018 NAI Fellows will be highlighted with a full-page announcement in the January 25, 2019 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education and in upcoming issues of Technology & Innovation.
