Educational Program - HHI Scholars

The MUSC College of Nursing, Hispanic Health Initiatives Scholars Program is designed to build cultural competency, increase sensitivity to community needs, improve the ability to tailor care, and provide the leadership skills necessary for our graduates to address the social determinants of health in order to help eliminate health disparities. These scholars are selected in their second semester of the accelerated BSN program. During their Community course, the students receive additional opportunities to focus on cultural effectiveness, immigrant health issues and social justice. Such opportunities include on-campus seminars with community members and clinical activities in neighborhoods with diverse populations. To participate in this program students must complete an application under “How to Apply” and be in good academic standing to be selected from the pool of applicants. HHI faculty and HHI scholars will come to one of the second semester courses and give a brief overview of the program but students should feel free to contact our office to learn more about the program.

Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce
The HHI faculty works with other faculty and staff in the College of Nursing to promote recruitment and retention of minority students. Examples of this are health career programs at local public schools, mentoring incoming students and encouraging involvement in HHI activities.
