Developing Scholar Award

In 1985, the Medical University of South Carolina established an award to recognize junior faculty who have made outstanding contributions to the university's research mission and to promote the continued development of these scholars. Recipients are those who have successfully demonstrated the capacity to compete for extramural funding while still in the formative stages of their careers and who demonstrate exceptional promise in the categories of Basic Science or Applied/Clinical Science.

Eligibility Criteria

The criteria for the Developing Scholar Award are as follows:

  • Must be an MUSC faculty member for at least two (2) years, and for no longer than six (6) years* regardless of university affiliation
  • Must hold the academic rank of Assistant Professor
  • Must not have previously received this award

* Exceptions allowed in cases of documented time off and/or part-time employment due to family or medical leave that significantly altered career trajectory.

Nomination Process

Nominations for this award will be accepted by MUSC faculty. To submit your nomination, please complete the online nomination form and provide a statement (not to exceed 1,000 words), which should

  1. outline the candidate's potential for continued growth and development,
  2. describe the quality of the nominee's work, and
  3. address how the nominee's research has impacted the state of knowledge of their particular research area.

Nominations shall be evaluated on the basis of the scholarly achievements of the applicant and the potential for further development of their creative efforts.

Nomination Portfolio

Upon nomination, nominees will be notified and asked to provide a nomination portfolio which should include the following.

  • Full curriculum vitae
  • Letters from four (4) scholars attesting to the research and scholarly activities of the nominee, with two (2) letters from individuals other than mentors
