This category recognizes faculty for teaching excellence in traditional didactic/classroom, small group, or laboratory settings.

Eligibility Criteria

The criteria for the Teaching Excellence Award in the Educator Lecturer category are as follows:

  • Must be a regular, full-time MUSC faculty member
  • Must hold the academic rank of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor
  • Must have taught at MUSC for at least three (3) years at the time of nomination
  • Must not have received this award within the previous three (3) years

Nomination Process

Nominations for this award will be accepted by faculty, staff, and students. To submit your nomination, please complete the online nomination form and provide a statement (not to exceed 1,000 words) summarizing the nominee's qualifications for this award.

Nomination Portfolio

Upon nomination, nominees will be notified and asked to provide a nomination portfolio which should include the following.

  • A statement describing their teaching philosophy (not to exceed 500 words)
  • A statement illustrating how they embody the MUSC Core Values of compassion, innovation, collaboration, respect, and integrity in their role (not to exceed 500 words)
  • Abbreviated curriculum vitae and scholarship up to the last five years (not to exceed five pages)
  • Summary of their teachings, including university courses, continuing education courses, workshops, or clinical teaching over the last three years
  • Letters of support from students and/or teaching peers (not to exceed five pages)
  • Other supporting documentation (not to exceed five pages), which may include any of the following:
    • Peer evaluations of teaching: summative reports
    • Practice (clinical) experiences on which faculty precepted learners
    • Learners supervised by faculty on special projects
    • Continuing education presentations/courses (submit title, date, audience, sponsor)
    • New lecture series developed
    • Description of new instructional techniques and laboratory methods instituted in a class (documentation of changes must be supplied by faculty along with analysis of effect of change)
    • Evidence that contributions to teaching have been, are being adopted, or are affecting teaching programs at other institutions
    • Evidence of impact on the professional careers of former students, colleagues, and junior faculty
    • Evidence of activities undertaken to improve teaching skills
    • Description of nominations for or recipient of honors and awards in recognition of outstanding teaching
    • Description of service as a guest lecturer in course(s) outside of individual's department or temporary course overload to help individual departments
    • Invitations to serve as a consultant in educational programs
