Message from the University Chief Diversity Officer & Title IX Coordinator

Dr. Willette Burnham-Williams

Welcome to the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

I am pleased you have decided to visit our website and you desire to learn more about the work that we do. Here at MUSC embracing diversity and inclusion is a priority. We are intentional in our strategic approach to creating and sustaining a community where students, faculty, staff, patients, families, and visitors are welcomed and feel valued and respected. Our Board of Trustees and our leadership team are totally committed to modeling the values and behaviors intrinsically aligned with what diversity and inclusion looks like in an academic health care organization.

For MUSC diversity and inclusion are not bounded by ethnicity alone. Our focus encompasses all aspects that make us unique – differences in skills and abilities, gender, rural versus urban upbringings, cultural heritage, sexual orientation, world views, geographic genesis, and so much more. Further, we hold every member of MUSC community accountable for contributing to the work and our progress is palpable.

I invite you to visit the various diversity, equity, and inclusion online resources and their related links. Use the navigation menu to the left of this page to access information and resources. Contact us if you are unable to find the information you need. Any member of my team will be pleased to assist you and/or refer you to the appropriate university resource that can serve you best.

I close with a quote from President, David J. Cole, MD, FACS.
“As we engage in this long-term process, we encourage everyone – inside and outside of the MUSC community – to join us and be part of our intentional advancement toward a more diverse and inclusive MUSC.”
