Checking in with the Center for Global Health

Once you arrive in Charleston, you are required to check in with the Center for Global Health so that your F-1 status can be validated in the SEVIS system. If your F-1 status is not validated in the SEVIS system, your status will become invalid and you will no longer be permitted to remain in the US in F-1 status. In addition, you must have your F-1 status validated in the SEVIS system before you register for classes at MUSC.

To check in with the Center for Global Health, you must make an appointment in advance to meet with Denise Smith, Principal Designated School Official (PDSO). To make an appointment, contact Denise in advance at fowled@musc.edu or by calling 843-792-7083.

When checking in with CGH, you must bring the following items/information:

  • A valid Form I-20 issued by MUSC
  • Passport with visa stamp
  • I-94 record (print online at Arrival/Departure Forms)
  • Address where you will be living in Charleston

At this check in appointment, Denise will go over your visa documents and the requirements of F-1 status with you. Denise will also provide you with information on Social Security numbers, obtaining a South Carolina driver’s license, traveling outside of the US, and maintaining your F-1 status. This appointment is a great opportunity to ask any questions that you may have related to your F-1 status.

You will also have the opportunity to meet with Rebeca Mueller at this check-in appointment. Rebeca is the Director of International Programs within the Center for Global Health, and she assists new international students and scholars with adjusting to life in the United States and Charleston in particular. Rebeca can answer questions that you may have about finding a place to live, getting around in Charleston, child care, English classes, and much more. Rebeca will also provide you with information on the various programs and events that MUSC offers for international students and scholars.
