"I had a long layover in Dubai, so we took a trip out to see the desert. Even as the sun was setting it was too bright for the film I loaded, so I put on a red filter hoping to cut the light. I tried to get pictures of just the desert, with no signs of human life - but only this picture that I took on the way back to the car was worth keeping. The filter played with the tire tracks, wind lines, and shadows to something more than what I’d seen that day.”

Welcome to our 2019 edition of Humanitas, the literary journal of the Medical University of South Carolina.

I would first like to thank the writers and artists who submitted their work this year; as always, it was a community-wide effort. Their creativity and drive are key to this project. The University also deserves our thanks for their eagerness in supporting Humanitas and other related activities on campus.

Albert Einstein once stated, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” Therefore, there is no surprise that the amount and quality of outstanding, creative pieces submitted to this year’s edition were staggering.

Each one of us, as an individual, is unique in our own creativity, experiences and beliefs. These individualistic moments create the pieces you see laid out in these pages, a snapshot, a stanza, a phrase, a note. All of which come together in one way or another to relate to you, the reader, to connect our stories, beliefs and emotions as one. Please enjoy the pages of immense creativity and expression that follow.

In closing, I would like to give special thanks and recognition to everyone that made this year’s edition a success, including all the staff editors. A warm thank you and much appreciation to Tabitha Samuel and Lisa Kerr, who are the main backbone of support for future generations of Humanitas viewers and artists.
