Loan Forgiveness Programs

Loan Forgiveness and Repayment Programs

There are alternative methods to paying student loans back. Be sure to check out these programs and your employer to see if there are any programs you are eligible to participate.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you are employed by the U.S. government (federal, state, local or tribal) or not-for-profit organization, you may be eligible for this program. To qualify, you must work full-time, have direct loans, use an income repayment plan, and make 120 qualifying payments. The loans forgiven are those that are direct loan programs that are not in default. The amounts forgiven are not considered income by the IRS. So, you will not pay federal income tax on the amounts that are forgiven.

Check out Federal Student Aid Public Service Loan Forgiveness for more information on qualifying employers, employment certification, eligible loans, and more.

Employer Loan Repayment or Tuition Reimbursement

One benefit to consider when applying for jobs is student loan forgiveness or tuition reimbursement.  Companies want to invest in their employees.  If your program allows you to work, seek employment that offers tuition reimbursement. Additionally, some companies are recognizing that their employees are burdened with student loans and will offer loan repayment. Be sure to check out the requirements for the program before agreeing to the conditions.
