Panopto is the MUSC content capture system. Panopto is an easy-to-use tool for recording different kinds of events such as in-class lectures, events, presentations, and tutorials. Recordings are able to be easily distributed to internal and external populations with the integration of Moodle and embed codes you can utilize. The URL to access Panopto is https://panopto.musc.edu
Panopto is installed on all the classroom computers on campus, and you have the ability to download it to any computer. Any computer equipped with a microphone is able to record audio, what is on the computer screen, and webcam.
If there is no “Create” button or “Download Panopto” link at the top of the page when you log in, email email@example.com with your NetID to become a creator and have a folder for your recordings created in Panopto. Once you are a creator, you can check the Panopto documentation to create, edit, and share recordings in Panopto.
Preparing your Moodle Course
To utilize Panopto with your Moodle course, you will need to add the Panopto block and provision your course. Follow these PDF directions on how to prepare your Moodle course (PDF).
Sharing Folders and Videos
Panopto has robust features for sharing a folder with all of its contents to other creators and viewers, and sharing an individual recording. At MUSC, your options for sharing are specific people, anyone at the organization with the link, or anyone with the link. Each option will give you an updated link or embed code to share the recording.
Captioning for Videos
Panopto offers a free speech recognition as a captioning tool within the site. Speech in Smart Search is a technology used to identify each word that is spoken in a recording. Once identified, the words are time stamped and added to a search index. Viewers can then search for spoken words, find the precise moment in the recording when they were mentioned, and fast-forward to that point in the recording. Since many viewers will be searching for a moment based on an idea or phrase they remember, Smart Search is an incredibly helpful part of your recording search engine. Panopto has the ability to add Speech in Smart Search generated captions to your Panopto sessions. Note that machine-generated captions clearly aren’t the same quality as human transcription so this is really just a way to generate captions that would be a starting point, meaning they would need to be revised and edited to ensure they are 100% accurate, once generated. This means these captions do not meet accessibility standards, so they will need to be edited by a human for 100% accuracy to be compliant.
Adding captions to videos is a two-step process. You must first process the folder/video for Speech in the Smart Search feature, and your sessions will be placed in the que to be processed. Please leave time for your requests to be processed. Once an individual session is picked up, it typically takes 2x recording time to generate captions. Finally, you can import captions into your video to be available for your viewers.

Panopto has the capability to stream out your sessions live. You are able to create a webcasting link before the session, send it out to your audience, then record in that same link when you are ready to open the live webcast. There is also the ability to broadcast your recording live at the time you begin recording it.

Panopto can capture any microphone, as well as multiple secondary sources at the same time such as computer screens, document cameras, and video. Each quiz automatically pauses video playback, allowing viewers to take as much time as needed with each question. Quiz results are aggregated for review, making it easy to see which students may have struggled with the material, and which questions were most challenging.
Panopto integrates with Moodle, so there it is seamless to share and manage course materials. You can add and manage video files inside your Moodle course pages, and each live webcast and on-demand recording can be linked or embedded. This allows students to access recordings from any device, including the mobile app.

If you select your PowerPoint as a secondary source in the Panopto recorder, Panopto will can index all your materials so that students can use the search bar on the website to find and fast-forward to words that are used within in the lecture on the slides.

All of the videos are under six minutes so you can get a glimpse of how to navigate Panopto. These videos can be accessed by signing into Panopto and clicking on Everything in the left-hand tab.

I forgot to stop recording my session.
Once you click the button to record in the Panopto recorder pop-up box, you must minimize it to see your screen if that is what you are recording. To pause or stop your recording, you will need to remember to reopen the pop-up box and stop the recording. If you do not stop your recording, you will not be able to edit the recording down to the time it was actually used. You will need to download the recording, edit it in a different editing software, then re-upload the shortened version. The original file will need to be deleted from Panopto due to the size.
I recorded my session to the wrong folder.
If you record your session to the incorrect folder, you are able to batch copy and/or move lectures to another folder location very easily.
I by mistake edited out a piece of my presentation I now want included.
The Panopto editor allows for easy web based editing from any modern browser. You can perform quick, non-destructive edits to any video on the Panopto platform. This means that the original recording will always be accessible for you to edit in and out pieces as you see fit for your viewers.
I turned off my computer right after I finished my recording and now it says it did not upload.
You will need to wait until your recording has been uploaded (not processed) before turning off your computer. The next step, processing, may take some time to complete but your computer does not need to be left on for this process to take place.
