E. Benjamin Clyburn, M.D., FACP, is a nationally recognized leader in graduate medical education and clinical teaching, currently serving as professor and chair of the Department of Medicine in the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In his role as chair, Dr. Clyburn oversees the clinical, education, and research programs of the department, which consists of 10 divisions and is the largest of the MUSC College of Medicine.
A faculty member since 1997, Dr. Clyburn has played a transformative role in shaping internal medicine education at MUSC for over two decades.
During his career at MUSC, Dr. Clyburn has held numerous leadership roles, including program director for the Internal Medicine Residency; secretary, vice president, and president of the Medical Staff; vice chair for Graduate Medical Education (GME); associate dean for GME-Faculty Development; senior associate dean for GME and Continuing Medical Education (CME); and designated institutional official (DIO) for GME. He was appointed chair of the Department of Medicine in 2021 after serving as interim chair in 2020.
He has served on the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee for the U.S. FDA and served eight years on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Review Committee for Internal Medicine. Dr. Clyburn is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and an engaged member of national organizations such as the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM). He currently holds the Boyle Endowed Chair in General Internal Medicine, supporting his continued work in education and geriatric care.
A respected mentor and educator, Dr. Clyburn has received multiple awards, including the Golden Apple Award, the Michael E. Assey Award for Outstanding Teaching, and ongoing recognition in Best Doctors in America.
A graduate of MUSC (M.D., 1989), Dr. Clyburn completed his internal medicine residency and chief residency at Wake Forest before holding faculty and leadership roles at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), prior to joining MUSC.
