Biography
R Adams Cowley II, M.D., M.S., is an orthopaedic spine surgeon who specializes in treating a wide range of conditions affecting the neck and back. His clinical interests include degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, adult spinal deformity and scoliosis, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, spinal instability, and complex spinal conditions.
Dr. Cowley believes that spine care should begin with understanding each patient's individual goals. He works with patients to identify the cause of their symptoms, explain their treatment options in clear terms, and develop a personalized plan for care. When surgery is appropriate, his goal is to use the safest and most effective approach while helping patients return to the activities that are important to them.
Following his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Cowley attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Cowley remained and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he served as Academic Chief Resident. He then completed advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. His fellowship included extensive experience caring for patients with complex spinal conditions, including adult spinal deformity and minimally invasive spine surgery.
In addition to patient care, Dr. Cowley is actively involved in spine research and education. His research has focused on improving the safety, durability, and outcomes of spine surgery, particularly for patients undergoing complex spinal reconstruction. He has presented his work nationally and internationally and received awards from AO Spine North America, the International Spinal Deformity Symposium, and other professional organizations.
