Complement-mediated Gut Microbiota Actions on the Skeleton
Dr. Hathaway-Schrader received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in cancer immunology from MUSC in 2015. Her postdoctoral training, under the guidance of Chad Novince, DDS, Ph.D., was focused on the impacts of commensal microbiota in osteoimmunology and bone remodeling. In Spring 2022, Dr. Hathaway-Schrader was awarded a VA Career Development Award at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and appointed as Assistant Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Stomatology at MUSC.
Studies elucidating how distinct microbiota communities have unique immunomodulatory actions impacting the developing and maturing skeleton have allowed for specific investigations into immune pathways targeting bone homeostasis. The Hathaway-Schrader laboratory aims to examine the role of the gut microbiota on skeletal maturation in health and disease. Current research is specifically focusing on the complement signaling pathway mediating gut microbiota effects on skeletal maturation throughout the lifespan. The Digestive Disease Research Core Center (DDRCC) will offer core facilities and scientific resources assisting in Dr. Hathaway-Schrader’s research program.
