John V. Marymont, M.D., MBA, is the executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). As MUSC’s chief academic officer, Dr. Marymont oversees the academic enterprise and advances strategic priorities that strengthen education, research, and clinical collaboration across the University’s six colleges and academic support units. His leadership centers on building high performing teams, elevating academic excellence, and guiding complex organizations through transformational growth.

Dr. Marymont joined MUSC from the University of South Alabama, where he held senior leadership positions across the academic and health system enterprise. His portfolio included medical education, research, and clinical operations, and his work advanced large scale organizational restructuring, strengthened accreditation outcomes, expanded academic offerings, and supported strategic growth across the institution. These efforts reflect his ability to align people, programs, and resources to move organizations forward.

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Marymont brings close to twenty five years of executive experience in academic medicine. He spent fifteen years at Baylor College of Medicine before moving into senior leadership roles at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center at Shreveport, where he chaired the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and served as interim dean of the College of Medicine. His work supported statewide healthcare shifts and strengthened academic programs during periods of organizational transition.

Dr. Marymont graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University and earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston, followed by fellowships in sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and foot and ankle surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. He later earned a certificate in medical and healthcare management and a Master of Business Administration from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University, where he was named a Jones Scholar.

His contributions to academic medicine and education have earned recognition through the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Awards at Baylor College of Medicine and election to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society as a faculty member. Dr. Marymont serves on the Jones Health Care Advisory Board at Rice University and as the Council of Deans Liaison to the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Business Affairs.
