Biography
Dr. Betty Tsao was recruited from UCLA, where she was Professor of Medicine to fill the SmartState® Endowed Chair in Inflammation Research. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the National Taiwan University, the Master of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Pittsburgh. She did postdoctoral fellowships at Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation, Indiana University School of Medicine and UCLA. She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), the American Association of Immunologists, and the American Society of Human Genetics. She has served as a member of Medical/Scientific Advisory Council, Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., as an Advisory Editor of Clinical Immunology and Arthritis & Rheumatology, as an Editorial Board Member of Lupus Science and Medicine and Clinical Immunology, as a Chair of the Abstract Selection Committee at the annual ACR meeting for the Genomics and Genetic Basis of Diseases Section, and as a Grant Reviewer for NIH study sections, Arthritis Research Campaign and the Wellcome Trust of the United Kingdom, the Canadian Institute of Health and Research, Arthritis Foundation, Alliance for Lupus Research, Lupus Foundation of America, and the Lupus Research Institute. Among her awards are the Arthritis Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Research Hero Award, the James Klinenberg Award of Excellence in Research of the Arthritis Foundation, Southern California Chapter, and Research Hero from the Lupus Foundation of American. Dr. Tsao’s research interest has been the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed research papers and over 30 book chapters or reviews. Her current research includes investigations in genetics, epigenetics, biomarkers and targeted treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus. She is a founding member of international SLE genetic consortium and has actively worked in the identification of SLE risk loci, the localization of underlying risk variants, and the characterization of functional consequences leading to disease manifestations. The Tsao laboratory has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Alliance for Lupus Research, and the Lupus Foundation of America.
