Dr. Turan’s research activities are focused on understanding the roles of traditional and novel risk factors in stroke-related atherosclerosis. She has been awarded several NIH grants to study novel MR imaging techniques for identifying high-risk, intracranial plaque features. In addition, her research includes directing and overseeing of the intensive risk factor management in the NIH-funded, multi-center clinical trials "Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Prevention of Recurrent stroke in Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS)", "Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy and Stenting Trial — 2 (CREST 2)", and "Comparison of Anti-coagulation vs antPlatelet Therapies for Intracranial Vascular Atherostenosis (CAPTIVA)" trial.

Dr. Turan is also the director of MUSC's NIH-StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center, "Southeast Collaborative Alliance for Stroke Trials (SE-CoAST)." She has published numerous papers and has presented her research at local, national and international conferences. Her clinical interests are in secondary prevention of stroke.
