Biography

Dr. Christine Carr is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina.  She also serves as the medical director of Health Data Exchange for Health Sciences South Carolina, and as a Senior Clinical Advisor for the South Carolina Hospital Association. Dr. Carr undertook her undergraduate studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, earned her M.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1992 and in 1995 completed her internship and residency in Emergency Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She has more than 20 years of experience in clinical, research, administrative, and leadership roles in emergency medicine.

Dr. Carr’s particular expertise is in clinical informatics, ED/hospital operations, and health care facility design. In 2008 Dr. Carr and colleagues at MUSC received and have successfully administered a $2.8 million Duke Endowment grant to launch the Carolina eHealth Alliance project (CeHA) and in 2011 were awarded a subsequent $600K grant to expand use cases of the HIE. She collaboratively brought five major competing hospital systems together to implement one of the most robust ED-based health information exchanges (HIE’s) in the country. Dr. Carr received the “Phenomenal Women in Business” award as a business woman making a difference in Charleston; she is the first physician from MUSC to garner this honor.  A member of the ACEP Coding and Nomenclature Committee, ACEP Reimbursement Committee and ACEP Section on Informatics, she has completed the ACEP/AMIA 10x10 course in applied health informatics. She completed the American College of Physician Executives Certified Physician Executive program earning her CPE in 2016. Dr. Carr serves as the American College of Emergency Physicians representative to the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) Health Guidelines Revisions Committee and as a thought leader for the Institute for Patient Centered Design. She works closely with the FGI and other national design, regulatory and architecture groups working to inform health care design.
