Biography

Dr. Fleming is an Associate Professor in Academic Affairs Faculty, the Director of Training and Intercultural Education in the Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Finance and Administration), and one of 2 inaugural Unconscious Bias Faculty Scholars. Her major duties include the development and implementation of a core curriculum on diversity and inclusion; the creation of enterprise-wide educational diversity and inclusion opportunities, and advancing educational strategies to equip leaders with the ability to manage, support, and foster a culture of appreciating diversity and practicing inclusion.

She is the founder of the Inaugural Center for Transformation and Change Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program as well as the co-founder of the inaugural David J. and Kathryn Cole BRIHTE Leadership Academy.

Dr. Fleming’s doctoral work at Youngstown State University (Youngstown, Ohio) focused on African-American students perceptions of  the impact of retention programs and services at predominately White institutions. Her training spans from historic Claflin University, The College of Charleston and South Carolina State University. She has worked extensively with the recruitment and retention of marginalized individuals.  Most of her current research interests include program development in the areas of leadership, social justice, civility, diversity and inclusion, ethnocultural empathy and working with marginalized populations.  She is committed to addressing the psychosocial needs of youth, children, and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) individuals in addition to developing culturally competent health care services; and training health care professionals in providing innovative and evidence-based services. She is the founder of the MUSC Safe Zone Ally Program and Safe Zone Advisory Council. She has published and presented nationally in the areas of diversity, inclusion, recruitment and retention.

Dr. Fleming began her journey at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2009 in the Office of Student Programs and Student Diversity.  She has served on the Faculty Senate, a member of the inaugural steering committee for the Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan and serves on the inaugural steering committee for the MUSC Leadership Institute.
