Biography
Kelly J. Hunt, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences of the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), has a personal area of research interest and expertise in the epidemiology of diabetes and cardiovascular disease with a specific focus on gestational exposures, cardiovascular risk and biomarker prediction. Trained as a cardiovascular disease epidemiologist, she has extensive experience integrating basic science with epidemiologic methods to evaluate biomarker prediction and disease mechanisms in studies such as DCCT/EDIC and the Veterans Affairs Diabetes Trial (VADT). Her work spans large epidemiologic cohorts, family-based studies, use of administrative data, and translational research efforts, all of which mirror the multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches essential for contemporary population science. She has extensive experience in designing, implementing and utilizing large observational cohort studies, which are inherently collaborative in nature, with much of her recent work focused on gestational and early life determinants of cardiometabolic disease. She is currently a site award PI of the NIH Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) cohort which is currently enrolling 20,000 pregnant persons and following their children to examine environmental exposures in relationship to child health and development. She also serves as Director of the Division of Epidemiology within the Department of Public Health Sciences as well as Graduate Training Director for MUSC’s Epidemiology MPH Program.
