Biography
Derek Nelson, MSBS, MLS, PA(ASCP)CM, is an assistant professor and the founding division director of the Master of Science in Pathologists’ Assistant Program in the College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina. He earned his Associate in Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology from Zane State College, Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Studies with a minor in Human Biology from Muskingum University, and Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences – Assistant in Pathology from the University of Toledo College of Medicine.
Before joining MUSC, Nelson taught microbiology, parasitology, and mycology at Zane State College and West Liberty University and later established South Carolina’s first Pathologists’ Assistant program at Anderson University, where he served as program director and chair of the School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. His academic interests focus on expanding the professional scope of pathologists’ assistants, advancing licensure initiatives, and enhancing educational methods in pathology, including the use of simulation.
