Biography

Paula S. Ramos, Ph.D. is a human geneticist with a research program focused on genetic determinants of autoimmunity, especially systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) and systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), in underrepresented U.S. minority populations who carry a high disease burden.

Dr. Ramos received a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) in 1996, followed by a M.Sc. in Developmental Biology from University Lusofona (Portugal) in 1997. After working as a research technician focusing on animal genetics, she attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and Genetics in 2007. Dr. Ramos completed her postdoctoral training in 2011 at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, focusing on statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology of autoimmune diseases. She joined the Medical University of South Carolina as an Assistant Professor in 2011.
