Paula S. Ramos, Ph.D. is a human geneticist with a research program focused on identifying genetic and epigenetic risk factors for autoimmunity, especially in systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) and systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) in health disparity populations.
Dr. Ramos received a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) in 1996, followed by a M.Sc. in Developmental Biology from University Lusofona (Portugal) in 1997. After working as a research technician on animal genetics, she attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and Genetics in 2007, working in the labs of Drs. Tim Behrens and Kathy Moser-Sivils. Dr. Ramos completed her postdoctoral training in 2011 at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the group of Dr. Carl Langefeld, on statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology of autoimmune diseases. She joined the Medical University of South Carolina as an Assistant Professor in 2011.
