Biography

I received my BS degree from Baylor University and my MD degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.  I completed Internal Medicine training at UNC Chapel Hill Hospitals prior to being a Medical Officer in the Air Force for four years.  I then completed a Rheumatology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center.  I was on faculty at Duke for 7 years prior to accepting a position at MUSC in 1996.  My research is in the disease lupus searching for causes and new treatments.  Our laboratory focus at this point is on the role of estrogen receptor alpha in the female predominance of lupus and the role of mucosal permeability as a trigger for lupus.  We are also leading a multi center trial of umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment for refractory lupus.  Significant effort is being undertaken to understand how these cells work to modulate the immune system in patients with lupus.
