Biography

Dr. McCart earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He holds an appointment as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. In addition, he is a Senior Research Scientist at the Oregon Social Learning Center. Dr. McCart’s research focuses on the prevention and treatment of serious behavioral health problems (e.g., substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression) among adolescents and emerging adults (aged 12 - 29). When developing and evaluating interventions for those problems, he takes a multisystemic focus, targeting precipitating factors at individual, family, school, and community levels. Dr. McCart has received extensive funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support all phases of intervention research, including initial development and pilot testing of treatment protocols, randomized efficacy studies, and multi-site hybrid implementation-effectiveness trials. Dr. McCart has over 80 publications, and he regularly serves as a reviewer of grant applications submitted to the NIH. In addition to his research expertise, Dr. McCart has provided consultation and supervision to community-based therapists treating adolescents, emerging adults, and their families for over 18 years.
