Main Research Interests
Dr. Yilmaz's lab focuses on elucidating the complex molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying interactions between the host and periodontopathic bacteria across the oral mucosa, brain, and gut axis. Chronic infection with P. gingivalis can contribute to a range of chronic diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and orodigestive cancers. Investigating the intracellular life of this pathogen can lead to the development of rational treatment strategies for P. gingivalis-associated chronic systemic diseases. Dr. Yilmaz has been named the “Lifetime” number "4" Top Ranked Scholar for P. gingivalis research in the US and number "9" in the world (Below).
