The Department of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is actively involved in all aspects of biomedical research, encompassing various disciplines, departments, centers, and institutes both at MUSC as well as other Medical Centers in the southeast and across the nation.
The Department is dedicated to the health and well-being of the citizens of both South Carolina and surrounding states as indicated by the number and variety of outreach programs. Our NIH research portfolio is broad and includes a P30 center grant, several U-type grants, and many R-type grants. Many of our investigators have VA Merit Awards as well. There is also a broad range of clinical and translational research activity that encompasses all the major organ systems. These research programs are nationally and internationally recognized for their scientific contributions that are leading to fundamental new insights into human disease.
The Department is also committed to training the next generation of physician-scientists. To accomplish this goal, most divisions have NIH-supported training programs.
Basic science in the Department of Medicine is more active than ever before. Research in inflammation has been active in several disease areas including rheumatologic, renal, infectious, gastrointestinal, endocrine, cardiac, and pulmonary disorders. One of the noteworthy core strengths of many investigators in the Department is in the areas of fibrosis. Groups working on lung, cardiac, skin, liver, and renal fibrosis are active and many are working in a collaborative fashion.
The Department of Medicine has strategically developed teams of scientists focused on discovering pathways of disease, identifying targets to intervene in disease, and translating those targets into therapeutic advances. An example of this is the intentional collocation of scientists on the 9th floor of the Clinical Sciences Building who are focused on diseases that result in inflammation and fibrosis of organs.
The Department of Medicine also has a broad clinical research portfolio. Studies include prospective and retrospective clinical observation, health record data modeling, investigator-initiated clinical trials, biomarker studies, and industry-sponsored clinical trials. Much of the clinical research on campus is supported by services from the South Carolina Translational Research Institute and the Office of Clinical Research.
