Course Access Request

MUSC Brightspace Roles for Credit Bearing Courses

All individuals in roles accessing credit bearing courses must be affiliated with MUSC and have the appropriate University sponsorship to access Brightspace.

To request access to a course, please complete a Course Access Request form.

If you are a Course Director, College Support Staff, or College Dean, you may make a bulk request for course section access using a Bulk Course Access Request form.

If you are accessing these forms from off-campus, a VPN or remote desktop connection must be established first.

Instructor

Instructors are actively teaching, editing, and grading within courses. These Individuals must be identified in Faculty180/Interfolio and must be qualified to teach the course. They have the highest level of permissions in the course in D2L. These individuals are typically named during the Course Activation process, well in advance of the start of the semester.

Role and Use Cases  Permissions Access Restrictions
Instructor is the default role assigned to faculty in charge of courses
The Instructor is the manager of the course.
Instructors can edit the content and activities of the course and perform all grading functions.
This role also controls access to course content.

Course Support

These individuals have access to students’ grades and other FERPA-protected information. Most individuals who would appropriate in this role are high-level Administrative Support or Student Support staff whose job responsibilities involve supporting all levels of the course. Most of these individuals will likely have already been designated in the Course Activation process (exceptions are when new individuals are hired in these positions mid semester). Individuals with this access must have justifiable need to know student grades and other FERPA protected information.

Course support is for anyone supporting the course as a need-to-know (i.e. co-instructors and administrative staff)
The Course Director must attest to this individual needing this role in the course.
Course support can edit the content and activities of the course and perform all grading functions.

Teaching Assistant

(Editing and Grading)

These are individuals serving the entire class as a Teaching Assistant, and who in that role need access to edit the course, as well as grade work and assign grades. These individuals must have defensible need to know student grades and other protected information for FERPA purposes.

The Course Director must attest to this individual needing this role in the course.
TAs are able to view course content.
TAs can also communicate with students through forums, email and other communication tools.
TAs have the ability to edit or add any content to the course page.
TAs can give feedback, give grades, and access the gradebook.

Teaching Assistant

These are individuals serving the entire class as a Teaching Assistant who need access to the full course including the classlist, attendance, discussion boards, etc. (all of which is FERPA-protected information) butnot to student grades. These individuals must have a need to know the information above for FERPA compliance.

The Course Director must attest to this individual needing this role in the course.
TAs are able to view course content.
TAs can also communicate with students through forums, email and other communication tools.
TAs do not have the ability to edit or add any content to the course page.
TAs cannot give feedback, give grades, or access the gradebook.
This role appears in classlist. Uses: Teaching Assistants who need access to all of the content as well as the classlist to support to course.		 Announcements – full access

Auditor

(Supplemental Instructors with Course Director Approval)

Auditors can view the course content only (including Panopto links). These individuals do not have ANY ACCESS to FERPA-protected information. There is no need to defend this level of access for FERPA compliance.
