Opening Keynote: Resilience Amidst Change

In the wake of recent disruptions, such as Hurricane Helene, Ben will explore the transformative impact of advancements in AI technology on education. He will delve into how these generative tools, modeled after human behavior, allow us to rethink our teaching and research methodologies. Join us to discover how AI can enhance and augment educational practices, paving the way for a more resilient and innovative future.

Morning Session: Advancing SoTL and AI at MUSC: Strengthening Infrastructure for Innovation

In this session, the Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) and the Director of AI Integration and Creative Learning will provide an overview of MUSC's approach to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), including support systems and the introduction of the Hopscotch for SoTL guide. The Director of AI Integration will share key findings from recent listening tours and unveil exciting new initiatives, including grant funding opportunities and upcoming training programs that aim to enhance AI integration. Together, they will outline MUSC's strategic vision for combining SoTL excellence with innovative AI applications in health sciences education. Participants will gain insights into both established resources and emerging opportunities for engaging in scholarly work at the intersection of teaching, learning, and artificial intelligence.

Morning Keynote: Do No Harm: AI Ethics + Safety for Medical Education

In this interactive session, we will explore the rapidly evolving landscape of AI ethics and safety, with a focus on its impact on medical education and clinical practice. Participants will gain a balanced understanding of the benefits AI can offer—as well as the ethical risks and challenges it introduces—particularly in the contexts of teaching, learning, and patient care. Participants will have a chance to engage directly with pressing questions around bias, accountability, safety, and trust in AI systems. This session will invite medical practitioners and educators to think critically about how to integrate AI responsibly while centering human values and ethical care.

Workshop: AI in SoTL: From Research Assistant to Research Subject

In this collaborative session with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and the Library, participants will explore practical AI applications in educational research through hands-on prompt engineering demonstrations and thoughtful examination of educational frameworks. Through interactive examples and guided practice, we will showcase how AI can serve as both a powerful research assistant and a subject of investigation in the curriculum.

By the end of this session, you will gain practical strategies for crafting effective AI prompts for research tasks, understand key educational concepts that frame AI integration in learning, and develop concrete action steps for incorporating AI in your own scholarly inquiry. Whether you're interested in using AI to enhance your research process or studying its impact on student learning, this session will provide you with the foundational knowledge and tools to move forward with confidence.
