Dr. Sylvia is Associate Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing, teaching in the DNP program. Her teaching focuses on evidence-based practice, informatics, and clinical analytics. She developed the first textbook in clinical analytics focused on the needs of the DNP in translating evidence into practice and continues to provide leadership on DNP curriculum development.
Dr. Sylvia began her nursing career as a med/surg nurse at a small community hospital in Vermont where she gained rich experience across the life spectrum caring for all ages of patients with varying medical conditions and surgical procedures. Across acute and ambulatory settings, she has practiced from multiple perspectives, including academic health systems, payers, providers, and community health organizations. This experience led her to pursue work which would improve the health and healthcare delivery for populations of people across the spectrum from wellness to illness. In her current practice she provides expertise in population health analytics; strategy; systems and program level interventions; and educational programs.
Dr. Sylvia has a passion for creating and understanding the structure, analytical methods, and clinical utility of large multifaceted data sets for ultimately improving the health of and healthcare delivery for individuals, groups, communities, and large populations. The focus area of her practice scholarship and research is in population health strategy, design, methods, implementation, management, and evaluation; health services, translational, outcomes, and feasibility research; quality improvement; and data analysis, structure, definitions, design, and management. She completed her BS in Nursing at the University of Vermont in 1999; MSN/MBA degree in 2004 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and Carey School of Business; and PhD in 2009 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
