Dr. Alekseyenko is recognized for his visionary research and education leadership achievements in Biomedical Data Science. He has distinguished himself by a comprehensive portfolio of original quantitative methodology and impactful collaborative applied research on the role of microbes in human health and disease. He has strengthened the ability to make discoveries in human microbiome in the state of South Carolina, by developing the research pipelines and resources at MUSC and filling the quantitative analytic expertise gaps. He has contributed to the realization of the vision and is leading as a Graduate Program Director the new statewide joint Clemson University-Medical University of South Carolina PhD training program in Biomedical Data Science and Informatics. This program has very few analogues in the nation and puts the state at the competitive advantage to lead the nation in this field.
Dr. Alekseyenko received his PhD training in Biomathematics at University of California Los Angeles in 2008. A year later, following two short-term postdoctoral experiences in the European Bioinformatics Institute, a branch of European Microbiology Labs, and at Stanford University Department of Statistics, Dr. Alekseyenko has been appointed as an Assistant Professor at Center for Health Informatics and Bioinformatics at New York University School of Medicine. Recognizing the need to develop new quantitative techniques to support the field, he has founded the Microbiome Informatics Lab at NYU. His scientific value was recognized by promotion to Associate Professor in the tenure-track in 2014.
He was recruited by MUSC Biomedical Informatics Center in 2015 and was appointed the Founding Director of Program for Human Microbiome Research. In 2017, he was appointed the inaugural Graduate Program Director for Joint Clemson-MUSC PhD training program in Biomedical Data Science and Informatics. The financial impact on the South Carolina biomedical research enterprise of Dr. Alekseyenko's academic efforts is estimated at $2.25M of direct principal investigator extramural funding and over $10.66M in collaborative and intramural research funds.
Dr. Alekseyenko has created original curricula in bioinformatics, and microbiome informatics and data analysis. His leadership in microbiome data science is visible within American Statistical Association (ASA) and American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) professional societies. Dr. Alekseyenko is Fellow of AMIA.
