Biography

Dr. Sudie Back received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia in 2004. She completed her clinical internship training with specialization in the treatment of substance use disorders at Yale University School of Medicine (2002-2003). She then completed her postdoctoral training at MUSC in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (2004-2005). She joined the MUSC faculty in 2005 and is currently Professor and Director of the Addiction Sciences Division, and Director of the NIH-sponsored Diversity in Addictions Research Training (DART) program at MUSC. Dr. Back is also a Staff Psychologist at the Ralph H. Johnson VA. Her primary research interests focus on the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans and civilians. She is involved in both psychosocial/behavioral and pharmacologic treatment trials, as well as laboratory-based and neuroimaging studies. Her research is funded through NIH, the Department of Defense and the VA. She is the prior/current recipient of a Career Development Award (K23), several R01s, an Independent Scientist Award (K02), and a Fulbright Scholar Award (Australia). Dr. Back is actively engaged in mentoring trainees, including current/past psychology interns, psychiatry residents, postdoctoral fellows, and junior investigators.
