Biography

Dr. William (Bill) Basco, MD, MS is Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Public Health Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. He serves as the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education and the Director of the Division of General Pediatrics. He completed his medical school training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, his pediatric residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, and an academic general pediatric fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. His early career research focused on the medical school selection process and how medical school training can influence medical student specialty choice and choice of practice location. Since 2006, his research has focused on pediatric prescribing errors, receiving funding from AHRQ for pediatric medication errors and HRSA for opioid prescribing. He currently collaborates with investigators in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University and in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at MUSC to evaluate opioid prescribing to children in South Carolina through projects funded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the South Carolina Medicaid program.
