Academic Focus
  • Dr. Blumer's research is focused on identifying the roles of accessory proteins for heterotrimeric G-protein signaling systems, in particular the Activator of G protein Signaling (AGS) proteins AGS3 and AGS4, within the context of chemokine signaling and other GPCR-directed cellular signals. Toward this end, the lab uses AGS3 and AGS4 null mouse models to assess their in vivo roles in chemokine signaling in leukocytes as well as cell-based and in vitro models for monitoring G-protein signaling.
  • Dr. Blumer is very active in medical education and is the Theme Leader (course director) for the Molecules, Metabolism and Therapeutics (MMT) theme in the College of Medicine FLEX pre-clerkship curriculum.

Dr. Blumer received his Ph.D. from Emory University and then pursued a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Stephen Lanier at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.  Dr. Blumer came to MUSC in 2006 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013, where he holds appointments in both Cell & Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics as well as Neurosciences. Dr. Blumer was named as the MUSC Developing Scholar Award recipient in 2012.  His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Blumer became the Theme Leader for the Molecules, Metabolism and Therapeutics (MMT) theme in the MUSC College of Medicine FLEX pre-clerkship curriculum (formerly Pharmacotherapeutics & Nutrition in the integrated curriculum) in the fall of 2016.  Within the MUSC College of Medicine pre-clerkship curriculum, he has won 11 Faculty Excellence Awards, awarded the Golden Apple twice (2017, 2018) and named Teacher of the Year three times (2017, 2018, 2019).  Dr. Blumer is designated as a Master Teacher in the MUSC Academy of Medical Educators.

Dr. Blumer serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
