Biography

Robert Bowen is an anesthesiologist who specializes in the care of patients undergoing heart, lung, and major vascular surgery. He provides care for these patients in both the operating room and in the intensive care unit, although he is able to and does provide anesthesia to patients undergoing a wide range of procedures and surgeries. He went to medical school at the University of Nebraska and completed his residency at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York-Presbyterian Hospital where he served as a Chief Resident in his final year. He completed fellowships in critical care and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis. He is board certified in anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and echocardiography. He joined the faculty at MUSC in 2022. His research interests include pain control for patients undergoing major surgery and how to improve the in-hospital patient experience, both in terms of improving patient outcomes and improving personal experience. In addition to his role in the operating rooms and the ICU, he also serves as an associate program director for the anesthesiology residency program, where he works to ensure that the residents at MUSC continue to receive the best possible educational experience so that they might go on to provide the best possible care.
