Sandra L. Fowler, M.D., MSc, is a professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases. She received her MD degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, and the MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She completed her training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and from there joined the faculty at MUSC.
Dr. Fowler’s scholarly work has been focused on clinical trials on vaccines, and on the natural history of herpes viruses, particularly herpes simplex and cytomegalovirus in newborns. She is currently leading MUSC’s participation of a natural history study of acute flaccid myelitis as a member of the NIH funded Congenital and Perinatal Infections Rare Diseases Clinical Research Consortium, and is also a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America’s Pediatric Bone and Joint Infection Guideline Committee.
Dr. Fowler has major clinical and teaching roles for resident and student trainees. She serves as co-director of the Evidence Based Medicine curriculum for the Department of Pediatrics. She provides clinical consultative services at Shawn Jenkins MUSC Children’s Hospital and at MUSC Health Summey Medical Pavilion. Dr. Fowler directs the HIV clinic for children, youth, and young adults. Her particular clinical areas of interest are in HIV infection, herpes virus infections, infections of the central nervous system, and in bone and joint infections.
She serves on numerous institutional committees and at the national level is co-chair of the Vaccine Advocacy Committee of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and is a member of the US News and World Report Best Children's Hospital Working Group on Infection Prevention.
