Biography

Dr. Rakin Hoq is a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist specializing in psychiatric consultation for children and families.  He earned his M.D. from Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), and completed his general psychiatry training at NEOMED, before going on to complete his child psychiatry training at New York University (NYU).  His clinical background has a focus in early childhood trauma and understanding family dynamics affecting children's mental health. 

At MUSC Dr. Hoq oversees the consultation service for Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital where he and his team providing mental health assessment and treatment recommendations for any children having emergency mental health crises and for children having acute mental health needs while receiving pediatric specialty care in the children's hospital. 

 Dr. Hoq also has a professional focus in academics serving as teaching faculty for medical students and physicians in training, and doing academic research.  His research focus includes medical education in psychiatry, family focused interventions with children, and mental health disparities and stigma affecting communities. He has given talks at several national conferences and published multiple academic papers in the field of psychiatry. Dr. Hoq has also received awards for excellence in humanism and leadership in the field of psychiatry.
