Biography

Dr. Alexis Nagel, PhD, is Research Instructor in the MUSC College of Nursing’s Office of Research. She received her PhD from Clemson University in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2010 and underwent subsequent postdoctoral training in proteomics in the Department of Pharmacology. Her research focused on the development and implementation of mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods to improve detection of protein post-translational modifications and drug-like small-molecules. Towards the end of her postdoc tenure, Dr. Nagel discovered she had an affinity for biomedical grant writing. She transitioned from the bench in 2016, serving first as a Research Officer and then Assistant Director for the MUSC Office of Research Development. In these roles, she worked primarily on large, multidisciplinary infrastructure and capacity-building grants, equipment proposals,  and led grant writing workshops for early career faculty. Within her current role, Dr. Nagel is helping to expand overall research funding for the College of Nursing by providing one-on-one support to faculty for the submission of competitive, independent research and career development proposals to the NIH and other federal agencies. Dr. Nagel is also active within the national RD community, volunteering with the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) to create resources for institutional RD internship programs and advertise the field to postdocs interested in alternative career paths.
