Biography

My general training is in immunology and autoimmunity, with specific expertise in lupus, lupus nephritis, endothelial dysfunction, biomarkers and predictors of lupus nephritis outcomes and atherosclerosis in lupus, and the role of reactive intermediates in lupus nephritis and atherosclerosis. My undergraduate training was in analytical chemistry. I have general training in immunological techniques, animal models of lupus, and immunopathogenic mechanisms in lupus. As a faculty member, I have maintained a translational research laboratory and have developed a clinical research program as an integral member of the Medical University of South Carolina Lupus Erythematosus (MUSCLE) clinical research group and the MCRC P60 and CCCR P30 leadership. I have conducted multiple investigator initiated clinical studies and commercial clinical trials.

I am the Director of the Clinical and Community Core of the NIAMS P30 Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR). I lead the CCCR informatics development to record patient phenotype in the medical record for interface with the registry, order research specimens through electronic order entry, and, store, retrieve and quality check clinical and pathology for use by internal and external investigators. Furthermore, as the former Informatics Medical Director of Research and Reporting for the Medical University Hospital Authority, I was in charge of integration of clinical research processes into the electronic health record and governance of research data. Collaborations developed during the time of this Directorship have lead to projects on electronic phenotyping and prediction and outcome tools derived from medical record data.
