Biography

Darlene Shaw, PhD is a tenured Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  Appointed as Associate Provost for Educational Affairs and Student Life in 2009, Dr. Shaw oversees activities in the Division of Education and Student Life.*   Dr. Shaw maintains her practice as a highly-respected clinician and serves the university in a number of important leadership roles, including Chief Institutional Strategy Officer.  Prior to 2009, Dr. Shaw held the following positions at MUSC:  Director of Counseling & Psychological Services, Executive Director for Student Health and Wellness, Associate Dean for Student Life, and Director of Medical Student Education and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.  Dr. Shaw has made outstanding contributions in the areas of service, leadership, and teaching, and is the recipient of numerous awards such as the MUSC Foundation Teaching Excellence Award in the Educator/Mentor category, the South Carolina Psychological Association Outstanding Educator Award, and the MUSC Women Scholars Initiative 2015 Advancement of Women Faculty Award.  She has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings.  She was selected from a national pool to participate in the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program and is Past-President of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry.
